Subversive Sewer

{September 27, 2008}   On fabric grocery bags

It occurred to me today while shopping that fabric grocery/shopping bags have been around since at least the 80s.  So why have they finally caught on?  I think it’s the fabric and the design.  Before, they were canvas tote bags.  You felt guilty handing them to the cashier because they had to hold them with one hand and pack with the other.  The canvas made them expensive.

The new bags are made of a cheaper fabric, so they’re only $1, and they stand up on their own.  They also have a loop at the top to hook onto the plastic bag holder.  They’re great.  I’ve collected quite a few from various stores.  Sweetbay Supermarkets make a $1.50 one that folds up and snaps into a little square!  I have 3 of those.

I’m so glad people are becoming more sensitive to environmental issues.  Even if it’s trendy, I’m still happy about it.
